Basic Features of MP3 Players

October 30th, 2008 · MP3 Players

1.Music Format Supported
MP3 is a universally supported format. Every portable audio player is capable of playing mp3 files, but that is not the only kind of audio format available. Apart from MP3 format, WMA and AAC are being used widely. Both of these formats offer higher sound quality and smaller file size than MP3. Also AAC and WMA support DRM (Digital Right Management) that is being used for access control of digital media from paid download services. Apart from these popular format there are open source format is also available like Ogg Vorbis, FLAC and Speex. Recently MPEG-4 is gaining good popularity among end user and mp3 player manufacturer.

2.Additional Audio Playback Feature
Virtually all MP3 players have the ability to fast-forward, rewind, repeat, and randomly shuffle through tracks and user-created playlists. Many newer MP3 players have a system that behaves like a virtual DJ, dynamically generating new playlists based on the amount of times you listen to particular songs and the optional rating you assign to them. Most players offer multiple preset equalization settings to give you the sound that you want, such as Pop, Jazz, Rock, and Classical.

3.Video Playback and Photo Viewing
Today’s MP3 player comes with wide range of functionality; apart from playing music they also support other functionality like photo and video viewing. Generally hard disk based MP3 player with 2 GB plus storage capacity have photo viewing functionality. Technological advancement give today’s MP3 players expanded capacity with large and brighter screens. Some of the players come with the new OLED technology that gives you a much better viewing experience. Additionally, better screen quality allows you to view thousands of your own high-resolution photos and images and even set up slide shows. Many MP3 players even display album cover art that is embedded in MP3 files, and newer iPods let you navigate through your music collection with their impressive Cover Flow interface.

4.Radio
FM radio is becoming more popular feature among MP3 player. Players with FM functionality usually have a robust number of presets and functionality to automatically search available FM radio station. It has become a must have feature for today’s younger generation. They simply love to listen to the radio and checkout the latest music.

Many current MP3 players come equipped with a tiny microphone for voice recording. Some players also haves functionality to record FM Radio broadcasts in MP3 format. It can also wirelessly sync. with your home PC to download music and video. The Archos 605 and 705 take full advantage of their wireless capabilities, enabling users to browse the web and even view streaming YouTube videos right on the device itself.

Popular MP3 Players of 2008

October 6th, 2008 · MP3 Players

1.Apple iPod Touch (8 GB)
The second generation of iPod Touch has become more value for money with its heavily reduced price and doubled-up features. The changes made in the design of iPod Touch are very little but more or less, the hardware has remained largely unchanged. Both the first - and second-generation iPod Touch share the same dimensions (4.3 inches by 2.4 inches by 0.31 inch), same glass-covered screen (3.5 inch), and same arrangement of headphone jack, dock connector, sleep button, and home button. Techradar.com says, “The iPod’s touch screen allows you to move the web pages around, open separate pages and zoom, but it’s the accelerometer sensor that impresses the most”. iPod Touch includes an amazing music player, podcast support, video playback (including iTunes rentals and a YouTube player), a Safari Web browser, photo viewer, an e-mail reader (compatible with Outlook, Exchange, MobileMe, Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, or any POP e-mail service), an integrated Wi-Fi music store, and a host of smaller utilities (weather, calendar, maps, stocks, notes, clock, contacts, and calculator). On the flips-side it has got a heavy cost, doesn’t come with expandable memory slot. There is disappointment for wireless fans there is no synchronization feature with iTunes. It also comes with an integrated speaker which is a welcome change from the first generation edition.

2.Apple iPod Nano (Fourth generation, 16 GB)
Apple has again raised the bar for MP3 players with the launch of the fourth generation iPod Nano. The new Nano is more tapered and hence easy to hold than its square-shaped predecessor. The screen of Nano has also become narrow and looks identical to the second generation iPod Nano. It packs in some amazing features like music, video and podcast playback as well as photos, calendar, games, alarms, stopwatch, contacts, notes, and clocks. It also has a shake-to-shuffle feature which enables the player to move into a shuffle mode on rigorous shaking. The new generation iPod also comes with voice recording but the only glitch is that you would need to buy an Apple approved headset for the same. It also comes with an astounding feature which allows the visually impaired users to hear menu, selection and playback. Besides, a host of features, the new Nano has its downside too. It supports playback for MP3, AAC, Audible, WAV, AIFF, and Apple Lossless but doesn’t support WMA files. Another issue is that users must upgrade to Apple’s iTunes 8 software with its laundry list of hardware requirements. According to nytimes.com, “The fourth-generation iPod Nano is easy on the eyes and the wallet, and you can’t beat its hardware and user interface design”.

3.Microsoft Zune 120 GB (Third generation)
Microsoft’s Zune is slowly but surely staking its claim as a worthy alternative to the Apple iPod classic with its amazing storage capacity, a 3.2 inch glass LCD, user friendly interface, support for audio and video podcasts, FM radio, wireless synching ability, good audio quality and a composite -video output. It also supports playing games and maintenance of audio books. However the battery life is not great and the glossy front is more prone to scratches. Also using many of the new features without a Zune Pass music subscription can be disappointing.

4.Archos 605 Wifi (30 GB)
The new Archos 605 Wi-Fi comes with a 4.3 inch TFT LCD touch screen which offers amazing clarity and stupendous resolution to make it arguably one of the most sought after gadgets for viewing. The screen surprisingly also resists scratches and smudges. In spite of a big screen, it is still small and thin enough to slide easily into your pants pocket. It also comes with some innovative features like a built-in-kickstand and internal speaker. It sports an MP3 player by default, a video player, a photo viewer, a PDF viewer, and the Content Portal feature, which uses the Wi-Fi connection to grab content directly from a handful of providers such as YouTube, Cinema Now, and BurnLounge. However Archos requires purchase of additional software for many of its features which mean that you need to shell out few extra bucks.

5.Sony NWZ-S738F Walkman (8 GB)
The Sony S-Series Walkman is nicely designed and has a high-quality feel. It also offers a load of features such as integrated noise-canceling, an FM tuner, podcast support, and a smart playlist creator. The display is bright and the interface is customizable and easy to navigate. The player sounds great right out of the box and features several sound-enhancement options. It has Rhapsody DNA and works flawlessly with Amazon Video on Demand. The downside is that the S series Walkman comes with only 8 GB and does not support a memory expansion feature. The packaged ear buds which are necessary for noise cancellation feature may not be comfortable for all the users.

6.Samsung T-10 (4 GB)
The Samsung T10 is a beautifully and ruggedly designed MP3 player with a vivid and colorful screen which plays well with the animated GUI. Like Sony’s Walkman series Rhapsody DNA is integrated for seamless subscription and Channel support. It is packaged with a host of features and support for Bluetooth which makes it even more adorable. A reviewer at cnet.com classifies it as a “A solid player for those who don’t want a nano/iTunes”. The T10 has a touch interface and offers decent sound quality. The T10 suffers from its own set of problems though. It lacks podcasting playback support and also limits the USB to proprietary connection cable. Jasmine France, editor at cnet.com sums it beautifully by saying, ‘However, users who want an engaging interface, plenty of features, and a device that will turn heads should definitely consider the T10′.

7.Creative Zen (4 GB)
The Creative Zen sports cool color screen and comes with added support of photo and video display. Cnet’s editor Jasmine France believes, ‘the Zen’s screen is fabulous. Photos look vibrant and bright, with excellent color saturation and good detail’. The Creative Zen player offers a list of desirable extras such as an SD card expansion slot, an FM radio, a voice recorder, and a user-definable EQ. It is slim, has a pocket-friendly design, is very user-friendly, supports subscription music and sports a reasonable price tag. Creative Zen has a couple of audio drawbacks though. At first the audio output isn’t too large. Secondly, it has got a restriction on the audio file formats which it can play. Jonathan Bray says at trustedreviews.com, “Creative comes in a greater range of capacities, has a larger screen and, importantly, isn’t tied to iTunes or a proprietary cable for syncing and charging. It comes in at roughly the same price too, the 4GB version selling for just under £100″.

Best Cell Phone service providers of 2008

October 5th, 2008 · Cell Phones

As far as the mobile data service goes, the story is not the same in US and Canada. Users take data usage seriously but not for granted since they pay too much for mobile data. In Canada users do not have an inexpensive data plan or an “All You Can Eat” mobile data plan like many providers have in the States.

Just like AT&T offers an “ALL You Can Eat” data plus voice plan for $100/month and others with even a lower data plan cost in USA, service providers in Canada should have something similar too. Consumers are ready for mobile converged services but may be unwilling to pay a premium for them. According to a survey conducted by KPMG, cellular phone owners worldwide revealed that consumers see absolutely no limits in terms of what services can be offered via their mobile handsets.

There are several other mobile services providers in US and Canada like AT & T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, Virgin Mobile and other small players. According to the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA), there are over 180 facilities-based wireless providers in the United States. The six largest (in order of subscribers) are AT&T (72.9 million), Verizon Wireless (69.3 million), Sprint Nextel Corporation (51.9 million), T-Mobile USA (31.5 million), Alltel (13.48 million) and TracFone Wireless (10.108 million).

Verizon - A consistent top scorer in customer satisfaction surveys. According to Consumer Reports it topped the list of all national cellular service providers in 2005 for reliability of the service and customer responsiveness, Verizon Wireless is one of the top companies in mobile telecommunications. Verizon uses CDMA for its digital network and in some areas they may have an advanced form of CDMA in use called EV-DO (Evolution Data Only).

Verizon Wireless is on the forefront of providing exceptional services to customers and will push the technology along in the coming years with wider EV-DO coverage. More high speed means more mobile data services. Verizon also uses analogue networks, but very rarely do we see people using phones in this network.

T-Mobile - Receives high marks in 18 of the largest cities in the United States but tends to have thin coverage outside those metropolitan areas. According to Consumer Reports 2005 surveys, T-Mobile is second only to Verizon in customer support. T-Mobile is a good choice if you travel outside the US because it uses a GSM network which will work in Europe and Asia.

Sprint / Nextel - Sprint / Nextel provides CDMA digital networks in most cities. It is the service of choice for those living in rural areas because Sprint has most of the nation blanketed in its analogue network.

Cingular - Despite the popularity of its store, it consistently has an average rating in customer service surveys according to 2005 Consumer Reports. Cingular uses GSM for digital service so it can be a good choice for those who travel overseas. It primarily depends on the data plans as the roaming charges differ for each country.

Pros and Cons of GSM & CDMA

October 5th, 2008 · Cell Phones

GSM

GSM technology is handset independent. You can change your handset by placing your SIM card into any phone. Hence it allows lot of flexibility to the users. Also the users can change the service provider depending on the quality of the services provided the consumer is not bound by a contractual service agreement. The quality of the call is more secured and besides this less power is consumed by a GSM handset phone. Also users having a tri band GSM phone can use the instrument anywhere across the globe. GSM phones come with a unique IMEI number which locks the phone permanently in case of a loss or a theft.

Like any other technology GSM has a few disadvantages also: The call and roaming charges for a GSM phone are much higher as compared to phones with CDMA technology. The data would be lost if the user losses the SIM card in case it has not been stored on the phone. Coverage becomes an issue in rural areas and places like tunnels. The transmission in GSM can some times interfere with electronic devices. That is why hospitals and even gas-stations restrict the use of cell phones.

CDMA

CDMA technology is widespread in the US. Hence most carriers support the technology and ensures trouble free signal while roaming. CDMA phones also consume less power. In places like tunnels, rural areas where there is low-signal CDMA offers excellent call quality. Because of excellent stability in national territories, CDMA users do not suffer from problems like dropped calls etc.

On the flip side, the transfer rate in CDMA is not as great as in GSM phones. The competition in this technology is restricted due to Qualcomm’s dominance. All the technologies in CDMA need to be licensed by Qualcomm. Switching devices is a pain in CDMA and it is also believed that the quality of international coverage in CDMA is poor.
